seriously? SERIOUSLY?

so this past Saturday I threw out 27.5 oz of tainted-with-gadolinium** pumped breastmilk. Or perfectly fine, drinkable breastmilk. YES--PERFECTLY FINE BREASTMILK! So perfectly fine, Chloë could have nursed and received all that milkie goodness straight from the source, fresh! Unfortunately, I only discovered this today. I pumped and dumped; I deprived my pumpkin of nursing; I turned my back (in this case my front) on Chloë so she wouldn't get tainted by gadolinium. Except she wouldn't have! According to the wonderful people at the Breastfeeding Center in Washington, DC, I could have continued breastfeeding without a worry in the world. And according to this too. And to the American College of Radiology.

I will no longer listen to the alleged MRI specialists who obviously know nothing about lactating women. I will not listen to any of the doctors who tried to give me advice (who shall remain nameless because despite it all, I still love them!) and instead I will only listen to lactation specialists when it comes to breastfeeding queries. Because they are probably the only ones who TRULY understand how hard it was for me to watch my little pumpkin desperately trying to nurse through my shirt.

PS. On an unrelated note, remember how we have the baby who won't (until recently anyway) poop on her own? Yeah, well, the baby who won't poop pooped in the bathtub. Yeah, that baby. Not as gross as you think, but still pretty gross.

** gadolinium is the contrast agent used in a lot of MRIs.

oh, oh, OH!

Chloë went number two THREE times today, all before noon, all normal, and unassisted! This is even better than the other day. Today is the day I really should have photographed her poop. But once again, I held back. Here's to hoping pooping becomes a normal, every day activity, so it can once again be relegated to the realms of grossness.

Update: She went another 2 times before the day was over!

i love poop

yes, I know, this post title is disgusting, but I cannot emphasize how much I love the fact that Chloё pooped for the first time in over 4 months ALL ON HER OWN.** It is definitely brag-worthy, and exciting, so much so, I almost took a picture, but something told me that would be crossing the line. Josh already can't get over the fact that I mention Chloё's poop problem to everyone and anyone who'll listen, I think if there was a picture he might never let me live it down. Never mind the fact that in years to come, if said picture surfaced, poor Chloё would be mortified. Seriously, before baby entered our life, I really could not imagine how much excitement could come from baby poop. I'm sure other parents feel the same way I do, especially in those first few precious weeks. For me, the poop monitoring (and excitement!) has continued for much longer than I ever thought possible. Either way, I am VERY excited by today's development. So much so that I am proud to say: I love poop.

** loooong story, but despite not being able to do it on her own, she did poop regularly prior to this monumental event.

our day out in georgetown

today Chloë got to hang out with her grandparents who came to visit for the day, and we all decided to go out for lunch. My dad wanted to go to Cafe Milano in Georgetown, and after packing enough diapers, some change of clothes, and getting ourselves ready, we were on our way.

everything was going so well, Chloë was in a good mood, smiling and charming everyone, the food was wonderful, and she even let me finish my food before she got hungry herself. I nursed her, and then let dad burp her. While he was holding her he said.."Hmm I think she's pooped." I was happy to hear it since she hadn't gone in two days..I sniffed around her and it did in fact seem as if she had finally pooped. As I picked her up to take her to the bathroom I realized my job was not going to be so easy..

Chloë pooped so much it had seeped from the sides and back of her diaper onto her clothes, onto Josh's shirt. Not a pretty sight in a restaurant. I managed to wrap her in a burp cloth, took her to the bathroom and got her changed WITHOUT a changing table. Her onesie had to be removed awkwardly to ensure no poop got on her, and after using up ALL of the wipes I had in my bag, she was clean, and very very happy.

Figures she would wait till we got to a nice restaurant to let it all out...

All in all it was a great day though!

pooped on

today after a nice day out, and everything going very well--including a shorter than usual 'fussy time'--chloë exploded while nursing--there was poop everywhere. we had to interrupt her dinner time to give her a second bath to clean her up properly. our pizza arrived just as we were washing her off..great timing.

pooped on

this morning's 10am feeding routine was going pretty well for most part. Chloë breastfed well, and finished her 2 oz bottle afterwards with little fuss. I held her against my chest for a while--her new favorite past time after eating--before getting her changed and dressed.

I handed her to Josh so I could pick out her outfit while he tried to get some more burps out of her and I grabbed her and plopped her onto the changing table when I was ready to primp her.

I cleaned her tiny poop and was applying her butt paste when I noticed milk spewing out of her tiny nose. I FREAKED and immediately picked her up--naked and all--and held her upright in my arms. Josh suggested I should wrap her in something but I was just concerned with the milk coming out of her nose so I just held her little naked body while Josh stared at me..just as I asked him if he was scared she was going to poop and pee all over the carpet I felt something down my legs and land on my foot. I looked down and it was poop. I didn't know what to do so I continued to hold her and then she started to pee...all over my legs and the carpet..

I was amused..not sure about Josh who had to clean the carpet.

PS. the poop and pee came out of the carpet after some heavy duty scrubbing.
