like mother, like daughter

Our Christmas in Brazil is not turning out as picture perfect as we would have hoped...Chloë and I are both so sick with a cold that has no end in sight and has become so bad we're both running a fever at night. No fun...I feel better during the day but she's still all cranky and sleepy...so, so sad..

green light

things are looking up...we leave for Brazil on Sunday (as opposed to tomorrow)--Dr. S. was happy with Chloë and wished us Happy Holidays as she announced we were clear to travel.

seriously?

bad news comes in threes, huh? so first Chloë decided she no longer likes to sleep, then she got an ear infection..drum roll for the third development of this week,please--I AM A MORON--I burnt my wrist/arm pretty badly yesterday while getting a bottle for Josh to give Chloë while I tried to take a warm shower and relax to see if my own cold/sore throat would subside..it's not as bad as the time I burnt my hand right before we left for Alaska (3rd degree burns!) but it's pretty bad..I'm sucking it up since I can't take any strong painkillers due to breastfeeding...ahhhhh hopefully Santa will bring me something nice this year.

uuuuughhhh yet again

We went to the doctor's on Monday morning and it turns out Chloë's cold has led to an ear infection which ultimately leads to us possibly not being able to travel to Brazil for Christmas. Obviously, I'm much more concerned about her getting better quickly, but it is a bummer about maybe missing a Christmas in Brazil with the whole family. We have a follow-up appointment on Thursday morning to determine whether we'll be allowed to fly on Friday evening.

On a side note, the antibiotics are making Chloë poop like there's no tomorrow..something she's always had a problem with, so she's VERY pleased with herself when she poops in the last couple of days.

early christmas

This past weekend we celebrated Christmas with my mom, sister and nephew because they'll be in England while we're (hopefully) in Brazil for Christmas. Chloë got way too many presents!

uuuughhhhh

On Friday night Chloë decided she was not a fan of sleeping..she coughed and sneezed and whined. I was so focused on her lack of sleep I forgot to notice that she was in fact developing a cold. By Saturday she was fully congested and whimpering about it. I finally caught up with her and on Sunday afternoon I had the worst sore throat in the world. Thankfully we have a doctor's appointment this morning...

lessons learned

We spent Thanksgiving in Buffalo, NY--we left on Thursday morning, and while the whole ordeal of traveling with baby takes time and is a bit of a pain in the bum, Chloë did surprisingly well during the travel portion of our trip--better than I expected anyway. It was all of the rest of the time that was tough. Traveling and meeting all of Josh's family meant Chloë's schedule was completely thrown for a loop and while it was wonderful to see everyone, poor Chloë was sooo tired, and got cranky a few times. I paid the price for all the chaos during the night when she refused to sleep as peacefully as she does back home. I probably got less than 4 hours of sleep every night that we were away. Anyway...here are some things I learned about flying with baby:

  • nursing during take-off and landing REALLY is a must! Chloë didn't even notice we were doing anything out of the ordinary..
  • even with two sets of hands, only one carry-on--the baby is a carry-on herself, making any additional bags just way too burdensome
  • the whole take your shoes off would work better if you weren't prohibited from passing the baby back and forth between two people
  • I did not need the 4 blankets, two different baby carriers, and get this...MAGAZINES for me to read!! Why, and how, I ever thought I would get some time to read is beyond me..
I'm sure there are other lessons learned lurking in the back of my mind somewhere..but for now this is it.

first flight with baby

flying with baby is becoming very labor intensive--and we haven't even arrived at the airport. I spent many hours today getting stuff together for our first flight with Chloë. We're going to Buffalo, NY for Thanksgiving for 4 nights. We have a total of 2 bags and 2 carry ons. Out of those 4 bags, only one has stuff for Josh and I--the other three are Chloë's. Who would have thought such a little thing requires so much STUFF? Here's a glimpse of the list I prepared to make sure I didn't forget anyting:

  • toys: Mr. Fish, Pink Elephant, and the Octopus
  • blankets: 4 (2 are a must, 2 extra just in case)
  • 2 swaddlemes
  • baby monitor
  • travel crib
  • sleepsuits
  • daytime clothes
  • winter gear: bunting, hat, and mittens
  • towels and washcloths
  • snap and go stroller
  • breast pump and accessories
  • Dr. Brown bottles
  • cooler with breast milk
  • Chloë's toiletries: shampoo, mylecon, little noses, tylenol, desitin, A&D
  • diaper bag
  • sleep positioner
  • print-out of TSA breast milk guidelines
And after all of that..I bet I'm going to forget something..

girls rule!

Chloë and I spent 3 days just us girls while Josh was in Austin, TX on a business trip.  We had a great time, though we missed him like crazy!  I was pleasantly surprised I was able to put Chloë to sleep given that Josh has been in charge of that for months, and when he's home and  I try to put her to sleep, she mocks me.  She just stares at me and smiles, and coos.  With him gone, I feared the worst..but she only gave me a hard time on Monday night--on Tuesday and Wednesday she went down fairly quickly. We'll try to keep this between ourselves so Josh continues to the proud and eager bedtime routine master!

girls' night(s)

Josh left this afternoon for a work trip to Austin, Texas.  He'll be back on Wednesday at around 11pm, so really, he'll be gone for 3 days.  It'll be the first time Chloë and I hang out by ourselves overnight--a real slumber party.  Asides from the fact that I am always terrified of sleeping in the house when Josh is gone, I also have to figure out a way to get Chloë to sleep, since Josh is the one who routinely puts her to sleep...

sleepless nights

last night Chloë woke me up at 11pm, 2am and 4am. After successfully putting her back to sleep at 5am, I thought I'd get a couple of hours of uninterrupted sleep. So much for optimism..by 6am she was up again. I gave up and had Josh go in and try to buy me an extra hour of sleep. He was successful in getting her to quiet down and I managed to sleep until 7:15am. It's 3:15pm and my eyelids are like deadweight...

football Sunday

today after breakfast and a family nap, we decided to go to Champps and watch some Sunday football to make Josh happy.  We were worried Chloë would be annoyed at the noise, but after about 20 minutes she fell asleep, and happily woke up about 10 minutes after I had finished eating--perfect timing.  We fed her at Champps before heading out to walk around the mall for a little while.  Santa was there, but Josh said Chloë wasn't dressed nicely enough for a photo with Mr. Claus.  I personally thought she looked perfect in her multi-colored winter hat.

feeding schedule

it seems Chloë is not the only one on a 3 hours feeding schedule.  We've recently discovered Kyra, our siberian husky, has decided that as the original baby of our family, she also wants to be fed every 3 hours.  Every time we get ready for Chloë to nurse, Kyra also wants some food.  She runs around, and jumps, gesturing us towards her bowl.  We've given in a few times, thinking, aw, poor Kyra she's so hungry.  On top of that, Kyra has also discovered that we don't really want her to bark at night, in case she wakes up Chloë with her howling.  So, just as get settled to enjoy some TV before bedtime, Kyra usually runs into the living room and starts doing her I'm-going-to-bark dance...we have been guilty of often giving in to her demands and offering some food in exchange for her silence.  Well, it seems as if our new feeding schedule and blackmailing has not been the best thing for our Kyra.  At her annual vet appointment we were told what we had been suspecting for a short while..Kyra is fat! She is 25 lbs heavier than she was a year ago!  She is now on a diet, and will probably start barking every night.

milestones

Chloë rolled over for the first time today! She went from her tummy to her back and didn't seem too fazed until Mariama and I started clapping and cheering--we scared her with out excitement and she started screaming!

nursing

I think I finally understand my relationship with nursing...after months of trying to perfect it and get in a groove..I've finally realized why nursing Chloe is so important to me. Asides from all the wonderful benefits of breastmilk, as well as the wonderful bonding time it offers us..I've discovered that nursing Chloe has taken a whole special meaning given how early she decided to make her entrance into our lives. To me, nursing her has also become my way of making up for the lost time she missed being 'inside'. So..that's my big revelation for the day.

another round of shots...

fresh from celebrating her 4 month birthday we had to take poor Chloë to get some shots..she cried SO loud, SO violently, I felt like she would hate me forever. Then Dr. S. reminded me that she won't remember a thing! At least she looked stylish and was very happy on her way to the doctor's.

giggles

chloë has started to not only smile widely, but she now laughs--giggles more like it--but it's definitely very amusing. Once she gets really happy and excited, she starts chuckling and giggling with her wide smile--melts my heart.  now I'm constantly trying new things that make her laugh.  pretending to eat her hands is definitely a winner..pretending to choke--another winner..go figure. she's got a wacky sense of humour.

sunday morning--daylight savings

last night chloë went to bed at 8:30pm, and I prayed and hoped all night that she would sleep a little bit later so we could try to casually adjust to the daylight savings time..she didn't exactly comply, but although she woke up to eat at 5:20am (old time) she stayed sort of half asleep in her crib just talking to herself for a while until 6am (old time)..at that point I went in and nursed her and she went right back to sleep as usual.  as usual she slept for an additional 2 hours and then woke up again at 9am (old time)..so we'll see tonight when we put her to bed if my strategy worked or not.  in enjoying mission almost accomplished I spent about half an hour trying to remember if she had eaten at 9:20am old time or new time..Josh helped me out by stating simply "She ate at 8:20am actual time."

2 years and counting

today we are celebrating our two year wedding anniversary...the nanny is staying late, and we are going OUT! I've been looking forward to this since our weekend in Cape May, NJ--another night out without baby spit up on my shirt as I eat dinner!

back to feeding frenzy

After 3 months, and a nicely established schedule, we decided to try more exclusive breastfeeding (without the need for supplementing) and realized Chloë might be very lazy!  I understand nursing is tiresome (or so I've heard) and it takes more work for our prima donna, but really, she should help me out some..instead of eating every 3-4 hours as in the days when she would nurse and then get a top off from the bottle, on Monday and today so far, she has decided she is more on a 2-3 hour schedule.  Doesn't sound like too much change, but trust me..it's exhausting.  I feel like I've gone back to her newborn days when she ate 8 times a day.  We'll see how long this lasts..we have a doctor's appointment in about a week, and depending on her weight gain, there'll be more changes to Chloë's schedule.

Sunday--the drive back

After managing to get a late check out, I let Josh sleep a little bit longer while Elery and I got all of the bags and things packed.  Chloë took a nap after her breakfast, and before we hit the road, I nursed in the hotel lounge so we could get a few hours in the car before having to stop again. An hour and a half into the trip we stopped to get some gas, and I thought.."hmm this gas station really stinks like poop."

I should have known better--Chloë stank like poop!  We had to change her in the car and to our delight she had pooped up her back and it was a bit of an adventure changing her.  She smiled the whole time, and after a few minutes we were back on the road.

Chloë slept for a couple of hours and then we pulled over to feed her again.  After 40 minutes or so, we were back on 95 South and finally encountered some nasty traffic.  Chloë was not pleased..after complaining for about 10 minutes she drifted off to sleep and stayed that way until we got home at 7:30pm.  After a nice bath and some milk, little miss Chloë went to sleep very quickly..she was EXHAUSTED from her weekend out!

Saturday--Our first real night out

After enjoying parenthood for a little over 3 months with nights out a thing of the past, we got ready on Saturday to get our drink on and have a grand old time at Ryan and Jenna's wedding.  After having had a little over 3 hours of sleep I had to start getting ready for the big day.  The ceremony was beautiful, and before the reception we had a couple of hours to kill, so we brought Chloë to meet everyone.  She was all bundled up because Cape May, NJ in October is FREEZING but she was in good spirits.  I had not packed proper winter attire for her, but we made do and she was very cozy and warm.  Everyone ohh-ed and ahh-ed at her and as soon as we dropped her back off with Elery, we went back to the reception.

I had to make a short stop at the concierge desk and drop off my breast pump so I could pump later in the night.  They weren't as weirded out by my request to leave my breast pump with them as I thought..I told them I'd come to get it at one point.  It was going to be a 'pump and dump' job as I planned on having a few drinks, but I didn't want to get uncomfortable hence the need for the pump.

We had a fantastic night dancing, drinking and seeing everyone! I went back to the room by 1am, and Josh stumbled in sometime around 4am.

Friday--the road trip begins...T-9 hours

Our first road trip with Chloë actually began for me at 11am on Friday, a full 9 hours before we were due to leave, so that I could pack and make sure I had everything we needed. After running around all day making sure all the bags and 'baby things' were in order, we got ready to feed Chloë her last feeding of the day at around 6:45pm. By 7:45pm we were ready to leave--we packed up the car, and my fears about everything not fitting ALMOST came true. Between her moses basket, and the stroller, and our bags, you could barely see out of the rearview mirror. We hit the road at 8pm and by 8:10pm Chloë was sound asleep. She slept the whole car ride, and only woke up once we brought her into the hotel room at 1am. At that point she got out of her schedule and wanted to be fed.

As Josh paced around the room eager to go out so we could meet everyone at the bar--I nursed Chloë until she was back asleep. Elery, our wonderful baby nurse, stayed with Chloë while Josh and I went to meet everyone out. By the time we arrived at the bar, everyone was already past drunk and close to calling it a night. It was still nice to see everyone before the wedding the next day.

Once we got back to the hotel at around 2:30am, Chloë was awake--apparently some late night partiers had made too much noise around the halls and woken her up. She managed to drift back to sleep by 2:45am, and slept until 6:30am. This gave me a total of 3 and half hours of sleep...

milk explosion

so in trying to respect Chloë's sleep, when I fed her this morning at 5:30am, I tried to disrupt her as little as possible.  She woke up crying and hungry, so I quickly changed her diaper which was heavy with pee, and we got settled to nurse.  She happily latched on and proceeded to make her little happy sighs noise as she ate.  10 minutes into it though, she must have been gulping way too quickly, and milk started to spurt out of her noise--a LOT!  I woke Josh up to help me clean her up, and as we nasal aspirated the milk out of her nose, milk jumped out of her mouth.  By this time, she was well awake, and we had to change her PJs, and clean her up before she could go back to eating.  Suffice to say, she was not pleased.  She finished her early breakfast, and went back to sleep at 6:20am.  But just to show me how unpleased she was with having been thoroughly disturbed earlier, she made sure to wake up again at 7:30am to ensure I couldn't sleep anymore.  I'm sure of it.  Our morning did get better as we went to the doctor for a weight check, and she's doing well, and weighing in over 10 lbs!

travelling with baby

in 4 days we are taking a road trip to Cape May, NJ for a wedding.  we are so excited but I have been consumed with mentally preparing myself for our first road trip with Chloë.  I've been googling "travelling with infant" nonstop and keep stressing out about how many additional "things" we need to take with us, so far this is my over paranoid list, subject to change ALL the time:

* an excessive amount of diapers
* an equally excessive amount of diaper wipes
* again, an excessive amount of clothes for Chloë
* swaddle blankets, burp cloths, towels
* car sear and stroller frame
* moses basket for Chloë to sleep in
* bouncy seat
* breast pump and BP accessories
* bottles
* freezer bags for breast milk transportation
* Chloë's toiletries
* sleep/music machine
* diaper bag
* car/portable bottle warmer

While I'm sure I'll think of some more things soon enough, I'm already concerned all of that will not fit in the trunk!

PS.  And in December we're going to Brazil for Christmas...

out of whack

after our day out in georgetown, Chloë's schedule got a little out of whack.  She didn't nap the whole day, so after we got home, she finally started napping at 6:30pm.  I soon realized she wasn't actually napping, but was in fact in a deep, deep sleep.  She ate at 3:30pm, so I gently woke her up at 10pm to eat.  She was half asleep, but hungry..so she ate and immediately fell back asleep.  Usually she eats frequently during the day and has her bedtime feeding at around 7-8pm..so this was a change from her schedule which seriously disrupted her.  During the night she woke up at 2am, 4:30am, 6am, and after eating again at 8am, she finally started to get back on her normal schedule.  By 8:30pm she was fast asleep, and hopefully back on her schedule so that I can sleep until at last 5am tomorrow..

our day out in georgetown

today Chloë got to hang out with her grandparents who came to visit for the day, and we all decided to go out for lunch. My dad wanted to go to Cafe Milano in Georgetown, and after packing enough diapers, some change of clothes, and getting ourselves ready, we were on our way.

everything was going so well, Chloë was in a good mood, smiling and charming everyone, the food was wonderful, and she even let me finish my food before she got hungry herself. I nursed her, and then let dad burp her. While he was holding her he said.."Hmm I think she's pooped." I was happy to hear it since she hadn't gone in two days..I sniffed around her and it did in fact seem as if she had finally pooped. As I picked her up to take her to the bathroom I realized my job was not going to be so easy..

Chloë pooped so much it had seeped from the sides and back of her diaper onto her clothes, onto Josh's shirt. Not a pretty sight in a restaurant. I managed to wrap her in a burp cloth, took her to the bathroom and got her changed WITHOUT a changing table. Her onesie had to be removed awkwardly to ensure no poop got on her, and after using up ALL of the wipes I had in my bag, she was clean, and very very happy.

Figures she would wait till we got to a nice restaurant to let it all out...

All in all it was a great day though!

time flies

I cannot believe it's been 3 months since Chloë joined us on the outside.  It's very interesting to think about life before her because while I remember life before her, I don't actually remember how it felt.  All I know now is how it feels to have her around.  It's weird because at times I used to be able to think back to a memory and now how it felt, know how I felt at that exact moment, whether it was 3 months ago, or 3 years ago, or 13 years ago.  Now, I can't quite remember things without putting Chloë in the equation and looking at it differently.

Hmm..I don't think I'm explaining this correctly...but I wonder if all mothers feel the same way.

isn't it supposed to get easier?

Today makes a week that I've gone back to work. Eventhough I only have to into the office once a week on Wednesdays, the other days I actually have to get some work done, so my days of lounging about with Chloë all day, every day, with Chloë are pretty much over..unless I have any secret desire to get fired. Which..to be fair, sometimes when I look at her, I think..maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea. Anyway..I thought perhaps it would get easier but today I missed her so, so much. Thankfully there's only two more days until the weekend. I plan on doing nothing and letting Chloë decide our plans. Sounds pretty wonderful to me..

expanded wardrobe

I wonder if Chloë is as excited as I am that she's getting bigger and can now fit into more clothes--she's even managed to outgrow all of her preemie outfits. I love the variety now!

first day at work

Words cannot express how much I missed Chloë today. Despite crying in the shower the two days prior to my first day back at work, I actually managed not to cry on my drive to work, and had a pretty good first day. I did not however, last the entire day..I left at 3pm because my heart started tugging, and I needed to come home and see her. As soon as I got home, it was time to nurse her..I don't know which one of us was happier to see the other...

no more shots, mommy!

today we went for Chloë's second round of shots. I think I was more nervous than she was..she actually did not even flinch during the first one, not even a whimper..the second one made her cry for a few seconds but even before I picked her up to nurse her she had stopped crying. She was so relaxed she nursed for almost 40 minutes and then fell asleep. She woke up an hour later and nursed for another 30 minutes. And she has gained some more weight (what with all this eating..) and is now two ounces short of 9 lbs.

an unconventional baby shower

most babies don't come to their own baby showers...however from the very beginning Chloë has stood out in a class of her own..and as such she insisted she be present at her own baby shower.  I think she was scared I wouldn't share the presents..who knows.  In the end, we all had a great time, so thank you ALL who came and helped us welcome Chloë!

first shot is the deepest

today Chloë got her first shots--her screams were so loud, I didn't know it was possible for someone so small to be that loud. the tears leaped out of her eyes, and she was so sad and red from crying. as soon as they finished, I picked her up and nursed her and it calmed her right down. she was as happy as a clam grasping my boob! she was also pretty excited about her band-aids she even smiled at the doctor twice!!

pooped on

today after a nice day out, and everything going very well--including a shorter than usual 'fussy time'--chloë exploded while nursing--there was poop everywhere. we had to interrupt her dinner time to give her a second bath to clean her up properly. our pizza arrived just as we were washing her off..great timing.

daddy's first smile

on friday, the first thing I did when Josh got home was tell him of the wonderful highlight of my day--chloë's first smile! We tried all weekend to get her to smile for daddy, and after pretty much giving up, on Monday night she smiled for him. As he said, he hadn't done anything funny, but she broke into a smile when he picked her up after we had changed her and were getting her ready for bed. Her smile made our night!

first smile!!!

today my baby girl smiled for the first time--we were just sitting there talking after her belly was full from a nice meal and she burst into a smile, not once, not twice, but three times!! I can't wait to take some pictures!!

world traveller

you would think getting a passport for a baby wouldn't be so difficult...

well, after figuring out what forms and documents I needed, I was all ready to go to the post office with Chloë in tow to get her American passport (the Brazilian passport will no doubt get its own extensive blog entry...)

I had all the things I needed:

* Passport Application Form
* Statement of Consent or Special Circumstances: For Minors Under 16
* An original copy of Chloë's birth certificate
* Two passport sized pictures
* A check for $134 for US Dept of State
* A check for $52 for US Post Office

After arriving at the post office and barely starting the process, we were immediately met with several obstacles, perhaps the most important being that the person in charge of processing passport applications didn't know how to process passport applications.

She didn't know which forms we needed, or whether the picture we had brought was going to be accepted by the State Dept (she informed me that in the picture Chloë's head was too big.) After a surprisingly patient explanation from me detailing the requirements and forms needed to issue Chloë her passport, the post office lady seemed happy enough to proceed but decided we needed to take a new picture.  Despite the fact that Chloë was asleep, I understood that a passport is an important document, and we don't want to mess around...so I woke her up, got her out of her car seat and held her for her picture. It came out great--I though, sweet, we're in business.

Hmm, not so fast.  The post office lady deleted the picture when trying to print it.  People make mistakes, right?  Well, she deleted it twice.  On the third attempt, I started to lose my cool a little, and demanded that someone else take the picture so I wouldn't have to keep coercing a 7 week baby to keep her eyes open for the picture....

So in the end, after an hour and half, we were done.  According to the very (in)competent post office employee, I should have Chloë's passport in 1-3 weeks.

The waiting begins...

a girls day out

today Chloë and I went to Sweet Life in Old Town Fairfax to meet Jess and Reagan, and Caitlin and Allison for lunch.  Chloë ended up wearing the very pretty pink and brown polka dot dress Daddy had picked out several months ago and she was supposed to wear on her way home from the hospital..except it was way too big for a little 4 lbs baby.  Now that she's almost 8 lbs, it almost fit perfectly!

We had a great time sitting outside and enjoying our lunch while the babies slept, looked around, and ate.  Chloë decided to give me a hard time and didn't eat very well while we were out, but to make up for it, she did sleep like an angel before and after she ate.  Our car ride there and back was pretty uneventful, except on the way back she decided to cry until I gave in and sang to her the whole way back.  That seemed to soothe her and by the time we got home she was sound asleep in her car seat. Sometimes I wonder if I should place her car seat inside her crib so she'll sleep as peacefully in her crib as she does when she's in there...

family day out!!

today after Chloë ate at 11am, we decided to spend the day out---after packing her diaper bag full of diapers, and a change of clothes, and the million and one things we need to have on hand, we set out for Arlington where we wanted to window shop and get lunch.  Chloë behaved really well, and despite some whining and crying for her binky, she did eat an sleep at the appropriate times, and was a hit with people on the street who were constantly wondering if she was "brand new" to which we had to explain..no, she's just tiny because she had ants in her pants and came out 6 weeks early!

it was by far the best day I've had as a family..other than the day Chloë was born and the day we brought her home...

making friends

today Chloë met Allison, Caitlin's daughter. The girls hung out and seemed to enjoy each other's companies as Caitlin and I talked for HOURS and HOURS about nothing and everything.

It was entertaining to see a 5 week old baby next to my 6 week preemie baby and see the size difference..though Allison was born two weeks past her due date--but still I forget how small Chloë is at times.

Regardless of how funny (but adorable!) they looked together, we all had a great time and it was so nice to talk to another new mom about the ins and outs of our early days of motherhood.
